With the rapid popularization of large language models in recent years, the use of language data as an information source for human-machine interaction has become increasingly attractive to researchers and is gradually starting to play a role in industrial scenarios, such as man-machine co-driving, intelligent robots, etc. However, the limitations of language's reliance on concrete descriptions, such as its lack of generalizability and spatial uncertainty, have limited the modality's development for embodied intelligence. To address this issue, moving from language intelligence to spatial intelligence provides a new perspective. By visualizing for insight, seeing for understanding, and understanding for action, combining digital technology, the capabilities of visual language models, and the means of deep reinforcement learning, gradually digitizing the human-machine symbiotic environment, semantically enriching their interaction, and visually fine-tuning spatial skills, ultimately achieving human-machine interaction in the cyber world, human-to-machine/robot skill transfer, and autonomous exploratory learning by embodied agents. As a first step, the speaker hopes that this work will spark open discussions and in-depth research among scholars and industry professionals and embrace the vast prospects of spatial intelligence in future industrial scenarios.
ABOUT THE LECTURER
Ir Dr PAI ZHENG is currently an Associate Professor, Wong Tit Shing Endowed Young Scholar in Smart Robotics in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and Director of Human-Machine Symbiotic Design and Manufacturing Laboratory (HMS-DML) Platform, at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, HKSAR. Dr. Zheng is a recipient of the SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineers Award (2024),HKPU Young Innovative Researcher Award (2023), and Top 50 Global “AI+X” Chinese Young Scholars (2022). His research interest mainly lies in smart product-service systems, human-robot collaboration, and smart manufacturing systems. He is a Senior Member of IEEE (2022 – )/CMES (2018 – ), Member of SME (2022 – )/ASME (2017 – ), CIRP Associate Member (2024 – ), SME | NAMRC Scientific Committee Member of Track 1: Manufacturing Systems, Technical Committee Co-chair of IEEE Robotics and Automation Society TC-Digital Manufacturing and Human-Centred Automation, and CMES Industrial Big Data and Intelligent Systems Chapter. He also serves as the Associate Editor of Journal of Intelligent Manufacturing, Journal of Cleaner Production and IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering, SME Journal of Manufacturing Systems, and Editorial Board Member of Advanced Engineering Informatics, Journal of Engineering Design.
