The 6th Chinese-European Workshop on Functional Pavement (CEW2020), hosted by the School of Transportation, Southeast University and co-organized by RWTH Aachen University, Delft University of Technology, Harbin Institute of Technology and China Highway and Transportation Society, was successfully held from October 18th to 21st in the form of the combination of online conference and offline live broadcast.

Prof. Xianhua Chen and Prof. Tao Ma were the executive chairman and vice-chairman of this international conference, respectively. Prof. Pan Liu, the Vice President of Southeast University, delivered the welcome speech to the experts and scholars from all over the world in the morning of 18th of the opening ceremony and Prof. Jun Chen, the Dean of the School of Transportation, gave a welcome speech to the invited keynote speakers in the afternoon of 18th. This conference consisted of three special sessions including CN-NL, CN-DE, and CN-UK-SA special session, and also included three parallel sessions. This meeting summarized the research results and future trends of functional pavement and contributed to the future development of functional pavement and technology. Prof. Xianhua Chen, which is from the Department of Highway and Railway Engineering of Southeast University, delivered the closing speech in the afternoon of 21st.

Online Conference
This conference covered a wide range of research topics, including functional pavement design, characterization of functional pavement materials and multiscale simulation, as well as in-depth discussion on the intelligent construction and digital twin, etc. The meeting strengthened the technical communication between China and Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and other European developed countries on the cutting-edge issues in the road engineering field and identified the future developing trends of functional pavement. This conference further consolidated and enhanced the international influence of the Department of Highway and Railway Engineering and the School of Transportation.
During the closing ceremony, Prof. Xianhua Chen, the executive chairman of the CEW 2020, firstly made a brief summary for this conference. He fully recognized the results of CEW 2020 and its significant contributions to the road engineering field, followed by an online award ceremony for the best presentation. Four postgraduate students from Tongji University, Southeast University, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Delft University of Technology won this award. Finally, Prof. Chen expressed his appreciations and wishes to the executive committee, the participated experts and scholars, and the postgraduate volunteers. Subsequently, Prof. Gordon Airey of the University of Nottingham and Prof. Yuqing Zhang of the Aston University delivered a speech on behalf of the preparatory committee of the next conference to welcome experts and scholars to attend the 7th Chinese-European Workshop on Functional Pavement, which will be held in the summer of 2022 in Birmingham, UK.
