On January 12, 2019, Prof. Cheng Jianchuan’s team of SEU won the silver award in the 2018 ‘China Design Cup’ Jiangsu Rural Road Creative Design Contest, public (non-professional) division. The contest was organized by Jiangsu DOT and held by China Design Group Co. Ltd with careful consideration and generous sponsorship. Lasting for 7 months, 1 golden, 3 silver and 6 bronze award contestants were selected for both professional and public divisions from 1567 works, after preliminary, playoff and final contests.
In the final contest, every contestant should present 2-min introduction and display 3-min video prepared. The jury was led by Liao Changwen, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, with Zhou Haitao, former chief engineer of the Ministry of Transport, and other 8 well-known experts. In addition, the cultural scholars, public figures, country cadres and media representatives were invited to vote for the works at the scene.
The work presented by Prof. Cheng’s team was rooted from the Xiashu forest farm in Jurong, Jiangsu Province, which was the practice field for the course Road Surveying and Design. Since 2008, Prof. Cheng’s team have directed nearly 1000 students to complete their two-week field program in summer. Basing on the 10-year experience and deep emotion, the team hoped to bring some benefit to localvillagers and improve theoverall situation of the rural roads and surrounding environment through their efforts. Adopting to local circumstances, the work proposed a series of reconstructive measure with the help of drone videos and field investigation. Meanwhile, the team proposed three new indexes to evaluate internal roads in the 3 villages, which is practical and could provide better service for the village residents.
